Android Auto 17.0 Arrives in Beta, But the Real Update Is Still Coming
A new version number just landed in the Android Auto beta channel, days after Android Show I/O Edition 2026, and the timing could not feel more deliberate.
Android Auto 17.0 is now available for beta testers, with the full build string reading Android Auto 17.0.1621 beta. It is a milestone number, but Google wants you to manage your expectations before you rush to install it.Â
Inside the Under-the-Hood Update
According to Autoevolution, Google does not treat major version increments as feature milestones for Android Auto.
Version 17.0 introduces no breaking changes and continues the same pattern of under-the-hood stability and performance improvements seen in recent releases, making the shift from 16.x to 17.0 a maintenance update rather than a major product milestone.
The update is currently beta-exclusive. Users not enrolled in the beta program can still access the build by downloading the standalone APK installer directly and sideloading it using a file manager.
The outlet describes this process as fast and non-destructive, with existing Android Auto installation data preserved automatically.
What 17.0 Does Not Include And Why That Matters
The bigger story is what 17.0 is not. Google announced the largest Android Auto redesign since Coolwalk at the Android Show: I/O Edition.
It is a Material 3 Expressive, overhaul with full-screen adaptive layouts, home screen widgets (contact shortcuts, weather card, garage door controls), and an immersive edge-to-edge Google Maps navigation mode spanning the entire car display.
Those features, described by autoevolution as the biggest Android Auto update ever, are not included in this build. Google confirmed they will arrive “later in 2026,” positioning 17.0 as a transitional release while the redesign completes its development cycle.
This gap matters after months of post-March update connection issues and user delays in meaningful improvements.Â
The I/O reveal confirms progress, but 17.0 is not the delivery vehicle. Dolby Atmos support, Gemini Intelligence integration, 3D immersive Google Maps navigation, and video playback for parked vehicles are all slated for later 17.x releases.
How to Get Android Auto 17.0 Today
For beta users, the update will roll out automatically via the Google Play Store in a staged release over the coming days.
Non-beta users can install it via the Android Auto Play Store listing by joining the beta or manually sideload the APK from APKMirror.
Android Auto 16.9 was promoted to stable just before 17.0 entered beta, so most users remain on 16.9 as the current production version. Stable release for 17.0 is expected within 1 or 2 weeks after beta stabilization, barring critical bugs.
