Sony Xperia 1 VIII Is Official: Announcing May 12 With a Camera Redesign Seven Years in the Making
Sony has ended the speculation. The Xperia 1 VIII, Sony’s 2026 flagship smartphone, will be announced on May 12 at 10:00 PM ET (May 13 at 11:00 AM Japan Time).
The event will stream live on Sony’s YouTube channel, and for the first time in years, the device appears genuinely different from previous Android phones revealed in the earlier Xperia lineup.
Sony confirmed the launch date alongside a teaser strongly hinting at a redesigned camera module, ending the vertical camera strip that has defined the Xperia 1 series since 2019.
The Camera Island Changes Everything
Seven generations of Xperia 1 devices used the same vertical camera strip along the left side of the rear panel. The Xperia 1 VIII replaces it with a centralized square camera island, a redesign leaked for months by OnLeaks and now heavily teased by Sony itself.
The new module houses a triple rear camera system: a 16mm ultrawide, 24mm primary camera, and 70mm fixed telephoto with a new 48MP sensor, up from the Xperia 1 VII’s 12MP telephoto unit.
As PhoneArena noted, Sony is also expected to make the Xperia 1 VIII slightly wider and thicker to accommodate the larger sensors.
The variable optical zoom telephoto introduced with the Xperia 1 VI in 2024, offering stepless zoom from 85mm to 170mm, appears to be gone. Sony is trading optical reach for higher resolution and larger sensors.
Whether that satisfies Xperia’s core audience of video professionals and enthusiasts will only become clear in hands-on testing. For users seeking the most from the Xperia 1 VIII’s camera system at launch, pairing it with the camera apps remains the most direct path to maximizing its output.
What Else Is Confirmed and Expected
The Xperia 1 VIII is expected to feature a 6.5-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a two-day battery.
The 3.5mm jack surviving another generation is no small detail; it remains one of the last remaining flagship Android phones to carry the port. Alongside it, front-facing stereo speakers and Android 16 out of the box round out the confirmed software side.
Four colorways leaked via Amazon Germany before that listing was pulled: Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold.
The same accidental listing placed European pricing at €1,868.99 and UK pricing at £1,728, both potentially bundled with Sony’s WH-1000XM6 headphones.
A June 26, 2026, ship date appeared in the Amazon listing before removal. US availability is not expected. Sony has not launched an Xperia flagship stateside since the Xperia 1 V in 2023, and nothing in the current leaks suggests that is changing.
