Android 17 QPR1 Beta 2 Is Out and Google Squashes Nine Bugs Ahead of I/O
Google has pushed Android 17 QPR1 Beta 2 to Pixel devices today, just two weeks after Beta 1 landed and hinted at the new “Pixel Glow” feature.
The update is not a feature drop. It carries build number CP31.260423.012.A1, weighs approximately 578MB, and targets one clear goal: clearing out critical bugs before Google I/O 2026 puts Android 17 center stage on May 19 and 20.
What Is Fixed in Android 17 QPR1 Beta 2
As confirmed by Google’s official Android developer release notes, the QPR1 Beta 2 build resolves the following issues across supported Pixel devices:
- Terminal app launch failure: The app was throwing an unresolvable error pop-up followed by infinite loading, leaving the feature completely inaccessible
- Lock screen overlap: Date and weather information were incorrectly overlapping the fingerprint sensor area on certain Pixel devices
- Conference call disconnection bug: Ending a third active call from a Bluetooth head unit was incorrectly dropping an existing conference call participant instead of the intended third caller
- Signal bar display error: Mobile signal bars were showing as empty or greyed out despite an active, healthy network connection, one of the more disorienting bugs for everyday users
- Custom themed app icon scaling: Icons using custom themes were incorrectly appearing enlarged on the home screen when returning from an open application
- F2FS file system bug: A low-level storage bug that could cause data corruption or unexpected system instability on devices running the F2FS file system
- Privacy dashboard descriptions: Updated descriptions now appear for the new activity monitor introduced in Android 17, specifically covering AI assistant access tracking
- Recent Items UI Stability: Fixed an issue where moving applications in the recent items screen caused visual glitches or system instability.
- Navigation Gesture Reliability: Resolved a bug where navigation bar swipe gestures failed to switch between recent apps correctly.
One notable detail: the Android 17 QPR1 Beta 2 update does not include the May 2026 security patch, retaining Beta 1’s April 2026 patch level instead.
Google’s Quick Beta 2 Rollout and Eligible Devices
Two betas in two weeks is a quick cadence, even by Google’s increasingly accelerated update rhythm.
The Terminal app failure and the F2FS data corruption issue were likely the primary motivators for the fast follow-up. Both are hard to leave unaddressed in a build that is technically suitable for general use, as Google’s own developer documentation notes for QPR releases.

How to Update and What’s New in Privacy
For Pixel owners already enrolled through the Android Beta Program, the update will arrive automatically over the air under Settings > System > Software updates > System Update.
OTA images are also available for manual sideloading on the Android developer site for those who prefer that route.
A user-facing change confirmed by 9to5Google shows the “Privacy dashboard” now includes updated descriptions for Android 17’s activity monitor for AI assistants, a small but meaningful update ahead of Google’s Android 17 AI transparency showcase at I/O.
The QPR1 cycle follows the same quarterly cadence used since Android 12. Those familiar with the Android 16 beta phase will recognize the pattern: early bug-heavy builds, rapid fixes, and a push toward a stable summer release.
