Google Photos Is Building a Digital Wardrobe With Virtual Try-on Built Right In
Google Photos is about to become the most useful app in your closet. Announced on April 29, 2026, a new feature called Wardrobe is coming to Google Photos this summer, and it goes well beyond a simple photo organizer.
It scans your entire photo library, identifies every piece of clothing and accessory you have ever worn, and builds a fully interactive digital closet from the images already sitting on your Android smartphone.
What Wardrobe Actually Does
According to 9to5Google, Google Photos Wardrobe will appear in the Collections tab, the same place where People and Albums live. The feature is split into two distinct sections: Items and Outfits.
Items is your full digital inventory. Google Photos uses on-device AI to scan your library and automatically generate clean, isolated snapshot images of individual clothing pieces like tops, bottoms, skirts, jewelry, and more, pulled from photos you have already taken.
Outfits is where the feature gets genuinely useful. This section pairs your clothing catalog with a virtual try-on capability that places your selected clothes onto a digital avatar built from your own photos.
The resulting look can be saved as a digital moodboard or shared directly with friends for a second opinion. Arriving shortly after a Google Photos video playback update, the feature is positioned as a practical AI-driven expansion of the app.
A floating action button labeled “Create” lets you manually mix and match pieces at any time, building new outfit combinations on demand without waiting for Google’s AI to suggest them.
Why This Is More Than a Novelty
The virtual try-on angle here is the part that separates Wardrobe from every previous smart album or auto-tagging feature Google has shipped.
While Google Search introduced shopping try-on in 2025 using model-based previews, Wardrobe applies similar tech to your actual wardrobe instead of retail items.
The practical use case is obvious. It gives a visual overview of your clothes and lets you test outfit combinations virtually before choosing what to wear, all in a single scrollable view.
For users relying on free AI apps to simplify daily decisions, Wardrobe fits the same use case but is built directly into an app already installed on most Android devices.
When Is It Coming
Google Photos Wardrobe will begin rolling out in summer 2026, arriving on Android first before making its way to iOS. No specific date has been given beyond that window.
