Huawei Just Beat Samsung and Apple to the World’s First Wide Foldable
Samsung and Apple have been rumored to be working on wide, foldable phones for months. Neither one has shipped it yet. Huawei just did.
The Pura X Max has been officially revealed, with pre-orders already open in China and a confirmed launch date of April 20, 2026.
In doing so, Huawei has beaten two of the world’s biggest smartphone companies to define what foldables look like next.
What Is the Huawei Pura X Max?
According to Beebom Gadgets, the Pura X Max is the world’s first wide foldable smartphone, a horizontally unfolding, book-style device with a significantly wider aspect ratio than anything currently on the market, set to launch alongside the Pura 90 series.
This is a complete departure from the original Pura X, which was a clamshell flip phone. The Pura X Max unfolds sideways, not vertically, producing a form factor that looks and behaves far more like a compact tablet, unlike any present Android devices.
Key Features of the Huawei Pura X Max
The Huawei Pura X Max official reveal and leaks highlight the following key features:
- 7.69-inch inner display with WQHD+ resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio
- 5.5-inch cover screen for everyday tasks without unfolding
- Triple rear camera system with Huawei’s Red Maple Quad Camera branding, with emphasis on telephoto improvements
- Kirin 9030 Pro chipset, Huawei’s latest nine-core chip, also powers the flagship Pura 90 Pro Max
- Minimal visible display crease visible in official images
- Five color options confirmed: black, white, blue, gold, and orange
- Storage configurations include 12GB+256GB, 12GB+512GB, 16GB+512GB, and 16GB+1TB
Huawei claims the 16:10 aspect ratio offers around 30% to 60% more usable display area than conventional foldables of similar size. This improves video watching, split-screen multitasking, and reading without the awkward feel of a tall, narrow device in landscape.
Why Samsung and Apple Should Be Paying Attention
According to Android Authority, the Huawei Pura X Max revives the wide foldable form factor first seen with the Google Pixel Fold, but with modern flagship specs and a confirmed launch timeline ahead of its rivals.
Timing is key. Its design closely matches the rumored Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, expected with a 7.6-inch inner display and 5.4-inch cover screen, but Huawei arrives first, setting the benchmark before Samsung.
Apple is also developing a wide foldable iPhone, reportedly targeting a September 2026 launch. Both rivals are coming, but Huawei arrives first, setting the reference point that everyone else will be compared against.
For Android users, the Pura X Max signals a shift in foldable design direction in 2026, especially as Android OS updates continue optimizing wider aspect ratios like its 16:10 display.
When Can You Get a Huawei Pura X Max?
The Pura X Max launches in China on April 20 alongside the Pura 90 series. Pre-orders are already live. Pricing has not been officially disclosed yet.
Global availability remains unconfirmed; Huawei’s previous Pura X stayed China-exclusive, so international buyers should not get too excited just yet. That picture should become clearer at the April 20 event.
